Getting Started

Power the unit on

Step 1: Hold the power button down until the second blue indicator light from the left comes on.
Step 2: The second blue indicator light will blink multiple times rapidly as the unit boots.
Step 3: The second blue indicator light will turn off for a moment and then come back on solid indicating that the unit is finished loading and is ready to be used.
Step 4: It may appear as though the unit turned off on the final blink, please give it time before pushing the power button again or the unit will be turned off.

Connecting to the device

Step 1: Go to your phones Wi-Fi settings and connect to your device’s Wi-Fi Access point.
Step 2: Open the App
Step 3: Tap the Local Devices icon on the far right of the menu.
Step 4: Tap on the device that you connected to in step 1 under the Local Netool (Wi-Fi) listing. If the device does not appear tap refresh a few times.
Step 5: You will then be brought back to the Main Screen. If you have successfully connected to the device via Local Netool (WI-FI) you will see a green checkmark on the top left.
Step 6: Plug an Ethernet cable from a port you would like to check into the Ethernet Port on the bottom of the Netool. The green light on the device indicates that a connection was made.

Switch Discovery (default)
Standard usage of the device. Toggle this option to discover important information about your ethernet port.

Host Discovery
Allows you to plug a netool into the line going back to a host and devices and detect their MAC address, IP address, VLAN id or OUI Company. Host discovery monitors packets (UDP, TCP, 802.1x, etc..) for sending MAC address and IP address. It also looks up the OUI based on the mac address within the a local database on your phone.

Capture to PCAP (USB)
Toggle this mode if you would like to use your device to collect data on a PCAP file.

WI-FI Settings

Set your devices name and choose between WiFi Access Point Mode or set up your WPA2 (Client Mode) login and password.

WPA2 Encryption (Client Mode)
Step 1: Tap the toggle next to WPA2 Encryption.
Step 2: Type in your login and password.
Step 3: Tap the green Apply! button.

Ethernet Settings

Enable or disable DHCP, set static IP or change the mac address of the Ethernet port.

Manually connect to a Tagged VLAN
All Layer 3 tests will run on the manually connected tagged VLAN. Test for DHCP on a tagged VLAN. Route devices connected to the netool’s built in access point to the subnet located on the set tagged VLAN. This allows connectivity with your smart device to the tagged VLANs network.

Step 1: Navigate to Ethernet Port. (Device Settings -> Ethernet Port)
Step 2: Enable Tagged VLAN via the toggle switch on the Ethernet Port screen, then enter the VLAN ID of the VLAN you would like to connect to and tap the green Apply! button.
Step 3: On the Main Screen refresh your tests.

Get a Netool.Cloud ID

Step 1:  Navigate to (Device Settings ->
Step 2: Toggle on – Remote Share.
Step 3: The app will find a ID, once it is found tap the symbol next to it to share the ID.

Connect to a device via

Step 1: Once a cloud ID has been shared with you either tap the link or copy the code and navigate to the Devices Screen. (If the link was used skip to step 4)
Step 2: Tap the cloud symbol next to the + in the top right corner of the Devices Screen.
Step 3: Enter the ID.
Step 4: Connect to the device name that matches the ID provided.
Step 5: The app will send you to the Main Screen.


Manually check for updates. Setup automatic update detection in Toggle Switches.

Troubleshooting: If the device is not finding an update and your device is not currently up to date.
Step 1: Ensure you have a connection to the internet. If you are not sure if your device is connecting to the internet check that the Internet Ping Test has pinged
Step 2: Make sure you have Internet Ping Test and Automatic Updates toggled ON.
Step 3: Toggle OFF Tagged Vlan and STP detection.
Step 4: Refresh your device on the Main Page.

Troubleshooting 2: If after following the above steps the update still does not appear.
Step 1: Navigate to the Updates screen.
Step 2: Unplug your netool from the Ethernet cable with an internet connection and plug it back in.


CAUTION: Once the update starts do not turn off your device or disconnect it from the internet.


Enable or disable discovery tests or automatic update detection

Toggling off scans you do not currently need can greatly reduce overall scan times.

Troubleshooting: Slow to populate / missing data.

Step 1: Navigate to Toggle Switches (Device Settings -> Toggle Switches)
Step 2: Tap the green Toggles for each scan you don’t need right now.
Step 3: Tap the green Apply! button.

Step 4: Navigate to Discovery Timers (Device Settings -> Discovery Timers)
Step 5: Increase the duration of the scan you are not seeing data for.
Step 6: Tap the green Apply! button.


Set the amount of time your netool scans for information on LLDP/CDP, Tagged VLAN IDs, LACP, and STP. Minimal duration: 10 seconds, Max: 120 Seconds.

Troubleshooting: If you are missing data, set the scan duration longer for the data you are missing as it may be broadcasting outside the current scan duration.

Step 1: Navigate to Discovery Timers (Device Settings -> Discovery Timers)
Step 2: Increase the duration of the scan you are not seeing data for.
Step 3: Tap the green Apply! button.

Set your Network Time Protocol

Step 1: Navigate to Network Time Protocol screen. (Device Settings -> Network Time Protocol)
Step 2: Toggle Enable NTP to the on position.
Step 3: Set your NTP server address.
Step 4: Select your time zone in the drop down menu.
Step 5: Tap the green Apply! button.

Start an ARP scan.

Step 1: Toggle on ARP scan and hit the green Apply! button.
Step 2: Navigate to the main screen and refresh the searches.
Step 3: Tap the blue ARP SCAN indicator on the main screen.
Step 4: Share your discovered information.


Displays your device’s current firmware build and the App version you are currently on.

From this screen you can also submit a helpdesk ticket and reboot the device.

Flash a port for identification

Step 1: On the Main Screen tap on the Flash Lan Port icon.
Step 2: A popup will appear asking if you want to turn on port flash mode. Tap “Turn On” to enable port flash mode.
Step 3: Once port flash mode is enabled you will get a popup telling you that it has started and the port flash icon will flash green.

List of tagged discoveries.

All Tagged History is saved to your device and not within your phone.

Other users that connect to the same device will see Tagged History data.

You can send history information in text or in a CSV file to other users via a email, text or any other text based app.

Tapping the refresh icon will clear all non tagged discovered data and re-run all tests.
Save the current discovered information into Tagged History.

How to tag and share discovered data.

Step 1: Once your device has completed scanning and displays the desired data on the Main Screen, tap the Tag Discovery symbol.
Step 2: Set a name for the Tag and tap OK.
Step 3: Navigate to the Tagged History screen to see your list of Tagged Discoveries.
Step 4: Tap the Share Discovery symbol or the CSV symbol.
Step 5: Send it to the desired recipient or save the data.

Share the current discovered information via text message, email, slack etc

How to share data.

Step 1: Once your device has completed scanning and has displayed the desired data, tap the Share Discovery symbol.
Step 2: Choose how you would like to share (email, text message, slack)
Step 3: Send the discovered data.

Allows you to connect to a local device or Tapping the + on the top right side of the screen will bring up a popup window where you can enter the IP address of your Netool manually.

Once connected to a device through the Devices screen the app will redirect you to the Main Screen.

Troubleshooting: If after you connect to the devices Wi-Fi via your phone/tablets Wi-Fi settings, the device is not being found in Local Netool (Wi-Fi) tap the refresh button. If the device does not appear after refreshing navigate back to your phones Wi-Fi settings and make sure you are still connected to the devices Wi-Fi.
